Detective Kaga Series
Detective Kyoichiro Kaga is a thoughtful, persistent investigator who relies on psychological insight rather than scientific spectacle. A former teacher, he pays close attention to the histories and relationships that surround a crime.
The Japanese Kaga series began with Graduation in 1986. Macmillan's English series currently lists the four novels below, which are not the first four Japanese appearances. Publication details were last checked July 29, 2026.

Malice

A woman's murder in Tokyo becomes connected to another death and to the long-unanswered story of Kaga's mother. The fourth English-translated Kaga novel brings a deeply personal thread to its conclusion.

For the four official English translations, this publication order is the clearest path:
- Malice (1996) — The first Kaga novel translated into English.
- Newcomer (2009) — Shows Kaga in a new light, working in a new precinct.

- The Final Curtain (2013) — A case tied to Kaga's family history.
