Why books 7 and 8 need a version note
In 2012, 虚像の道化師 ガリレオ7 and禁断の魔術 ガリレオ8 were separate four-story collections. Their 2015 paperback editions reorganized that material, so a current paperback does not have the same contents or form as the original numbered volume.

Where should an English reader start?
These are reading suggestions, not another official numbering system. The translated novels center on separate cases, but publisher order preserves the returning characters' English publication sequence.
Start with The Devotion of Suspect X
It is Macmillan's English volume one and requires no skipped English volume before it.
Follow Macmillan volumes 1–5
This is the simplest path through the books currently published in the official English sequence.
Read Invisible Helix, then return to volume one
It is the latest published English Galileo novel, but this shortcut does not imply direct story continuity with Japanese book 11.
